BBC Brasil is the brasilian national news portal of BBC’s (British Broadcasting Corporation) World Service. The portal has the Brazil, International, Economy, Health, Science, Technology and #SalaSocial (social network) sections, besides the English learning “Aprenda inglês” section, with news videos in English for language practice.
The “BBC Brasil” brand was created in 2000, under the bbcbrasil.com domain. In that decade, BBC invested in the expansion of content production, sold to brazilian media portals and companies.
The portal has a team in London and another one in São Paulo. Their São Paulo office employs five journalists, besides an administrative manager, a business manager and the chief editor, Caio Quero. In London, BBC Brasil’s newsroom has four editors, three journalists and the chief editor Ricardo Acampora. The general director is the journalist Silvia Salek.
BBC Brasil’s portal is part of a new production phase in the operations of the news company in Brazil. This operation has three major phases according to Laurindo Leal’s book “Vozes de Londres: memórias brasileiras da BBC” (Voices of London: brazilian memories of the BBC”): the first brought updated and precise news about World War II to Brazil; the second challenged the information blockade imposed by the military dictatorship; the third and current phase would be characterized for following technological transformations in order to maintain BBC’s information and culture standards.
